Off-Center Quilt

Shoo Fly

This 54" x 66" lap quilt design is made using 6" Shoo Fly blocks.

It's definitely different.  Can I make it work?

Applique

Tessellated Quilt

This tessellated pattern is made by repeating a simple rotated block.

I want to see what it looks like in various colors.

And I want to try appliqueing on it with this figure composed of pieces cut on my Go fabric die cutter.

Colors

Friendship Star Quilt

Yesterday I decided I liked this quilt design. It is a combination of piecing and applique.

Today I decided I'm not totally happy with the colors. I'd like to tweak them.

Applique

Friendship Star Quilt

Two days ago, 25 August 2010, I designed this quilt top. Now I want to see what happens if I add some applique to it.

Off-center Quilt

Sawtooth Star

I want to design a 72" x 96" quilt top using 6" Sawtooth Stars.

What if I create a series of boxes that nest in the top right corner? I'll start with dark purple stars on the outside and transition to light purple in the center.

Off-Center Quilt

Friendship Star

I want to use 6" Friendship Stars to make a 36" x 48" quilt.

What if I create a rectangular box of blue Friendship Stars?

What if I create a smaller box of red Friendship stars, but instead of centering it I nestle it into the upper right corner?

Off-Center Quilt

Nine Patch

This is a 6 x 8 quilt grid of 12" squares.

When designing a quilt it is usual to make a design that is symmetrical about point A in the center of the quilt.

What if I create a design that is centered about point B instead?

Quilting

Circles Placemat

This placemat design comes from my 20 August 2010 post.

I want to experiment with ways of quilting it.

Borders

Ohio Star

This quilt design appeared in my 19 August 2010 post. It needs borders.

Applique

Circles Placemat

I want to create placemats by adapting some of the applique designs I created for circles 27 July 2010.

Colors

Ohio Star

Yesterday I played with the colors for this quilt design and got nowhere. I'm going to try again today.

Colors

Ohio Star

This quilt design from yesterday's post was intended to be a series of Ohio Star blocks separated by a sashing of alternating white and beige squares. Instead it looks like overlapping Ohio Star blocks and Nine Patch blocks.

Sashing

Ohio Star

This Ohio Star quilt is colorful but I think it needs something more.

What if I try adding some sashing?

Sashing

King's Crown

When I repeat a King's Crown block I get a pattern that is pleasant but not very exciting.

What if I put sashing between the blocks?

Sashing

Road to Oklahoma

I've only ever made one quilt that had sashing. Maybe if I play with sashing and explore some of its possibilities, I might decide to make another. I'm going to try adding sashing to some of yesterdays Road to Oklahoma quilt designs and see what happens.

On Point

Kansas Star

This on point Kansas Star comes from my 16 May 2010 post. I'm going to play with it again to see if I can create a different quilt top.

What if I color this Amish Star block several different ways to see how color affects pattern?

On Point

Shoo Fly

What if I turn a Shoo Fly block on point? Can I use it to create a quilt pattern I like?

Blocks

Wonky Shoo Fly

Yesterday I discovered that I could make a series of 12" wonky Shoo Fly Blocks by simply rearranging the order of the grid dimensions of a Shoo Fly block.

Blocks

Wonky Shoo Fly

I've been taking traditional blocks, like Shoo Fly, and turning them into wonky blocks by changing the grid.

I've been turning 6" blocks into 10" blocks  by changing a 2, 2, 2 grid into a 2, 3, 5 grid.

Applique

Swoosh Placemat

I used this swoosh to design several applique patterns 9 July 2010. Now I want to adapt some of those patterns to placemats.

Pieced alphabets often have cut corners to indicate curves. With Braeside I've taken the cut corners to the extreme.
