Log Cabin

Modern Log Cabins

You may have noticed that I like to change old blocks to make new ones. Today I'm going to experiment with a Log Cabin block.

As you probably know a Log Cabin block starts with 2 squares at its center. Strips of fabric are added to each side in turn, spiralling outward.

A traditional Log Cabin block is colored so that it is split diagonally into a light and a dark half.

What happens when I vary the width of the center units and the strips? What happens if I then play with how the block is colored.

My playing resulted in some very modern looking blocks and quilts. To look at them you wouldn't think they had anything to do with a Log Cabin block.
