Look What Pauline Did

Pauline started with a Shoo Fly block; cut it into quarters; and reassembled the quarters to make a new block. She then used the new block to make this quilt.

If you are having trouble picturing the Shoo Fly block it looked like this:

Look What Darla Did

Darla made a large version of my Disappearing Shoo Fly design.

"I could not believe how easy it was to do this quilt. I really think it should be done as a quick & easy video, and I think people would flock to this design....Can't wait to quilt this thing, but I have a few more ahead of this in line!"

Darla sometimes goes by the name of Scientific Quilter.

Look What Wendy did

Wendy sent me this picture of her version of my Disappearing Shoo Fly quilt.

Here's what she had to say:

"Hi!! I am the Australian tourist whose Canadian cousin challenged me at Drumheller last July to replicate your 'Disappearing Shoofly' in my own colours. I really appreciated your permission to photograph the quilt and have regularly checked your website- and will continue to do so. The colours were inspired by our lovely white beaches with waters that go from teal to deep blue, plus the colours of desert sand hills. Happy memories."

Old Block Plus

Shoo Fly

What if I start with a simple block design, in this case Shoo Fly; place it on a grid; and then add new design elements?

I get new blocks that I can use to design my own quilts..

What if I start with these 3 very simple blocks? Can I combine them to create interesting quilt designs?

Shoo Fly

I've chosen these three blocks to experiment with. I want to see if I can find interesting ways to combine them and come up with new quilt designs.

What If I Mix Up Two Blocks?

Shoo Fly                         Friendship Star

What if I make a Shoo Fly block and a Friendship Star block, cut them both into four pieces and then mix the pieces up?

Quilting

Shoo Fly Place Mat

Version 4

Once again I'm playing with the idea that quilting can change how a quilt looks.
This place mat is made using 6 Shoo Fly blocks.

Quilting

Shoo Fly Place Mat

Version 3

I'm playing with the idea that quilting can change the way a block looks.

I'm testing the idea out on a place mat made of 6 simple Shoo Fly Blocks.

In this case I'm using a kind of star to focus attention on the center of the blocks.

Here's how I envision quilting this design:

Quilting

Shoo Fly Place Mat

Version 2

This quilting is very different from that for Version 1.

The quilting is continuous. Here's how I suggest doing it:

The design starts with a large and a small version of a Shoo Fly block.

Quilting

Shoo Fly Place Mat

Version 1

A place mat made with six Shoo Fly blocks is a little more interesting than one made with six Nine Patch blocks.

So I decided for a change to try designing quilting for a Shoo Fly block place mat.

This is what I came up with.

What if I pair Shoo Fly and Rolling Stone blocks? Will the combination give me any interesting quilt designs?

What Can I Do

To A Shoo Fly Block ...

...To Make It My Own?

It happens to everyone. You're assembling a block and somehow the pieces don't go together the way they're supposed to. So you say something like, "Oops, I made a mistake."

Think again. You didn't make a mistake. You made a new block.
