This Quilt's By Karen

Karen Trzcinski took this idea from my 30 July 2010 post and turned it into a quilt for her young cousin who chose the colors.

I like the fact that Karen used 3 colors instead of the original 2. But I really like the border treatment. The 2 vertical stripes is a great idea. I'm going to have to try that on one of my quilts.

What If We Go Back To June 2010?

A little over a year ago I was playing with this tessellating block.

What Do You Think?

Is This A Cat Tilting Its Head?

Add eyes, whiskers, and a tongue, and this could very well be a cat cleaning itself. Caroll was playing with a block design of mine and discovered this.

You Need To Play With Color

If You Are Going To Design A Quilt

Nothing is more important than color choices when it comes to designing a quilt. Color is the first thing you notice about a quilt. And color is the most important factor in determining whether you like a quilt.

You can change a quilt design just by changing its colors.

An Easy Way For You To Design

A Tessellated Quilt

A tessellated quilt uses a single shape repeated over and over to fill the space. You might think it would be hard to design a tessellating shape. But it's not.

There are several ways to do it. I'm going to show you my current favorite way.

A Complex Tessellation

For You To Ponder

This quilt is a tessellation; it's made by repeating a single shape over and over. It's called Anthracite/Snowflake and was sewn by my wife Linda and designed by me. I didn't start out to design a tessellating pattern; it just happened. How it happened surprised me.

A Simple Tessellation

For You To Ponder

This is my quilt Okotoks/Sheep Creek; it's a simple tessellation. A tessellation is a jigsaw puzzle in which all the pieces are the same shape.

Colors

Tessellation

This tessellation comes from a recent post (27 November 2010). It needs more color than just blue and white.

Tessellation

Starting with these 2 simple blocks which are the reverse of each other, I want to try to create a tessellation.
What if I try combining 2 of each rotated to make a larger block?

Colors

Tessellated Quilt

Yesterday I decided I liked this tessellated quilt pattern. Today I'm going to try coloring it different ways.

Tessellation

I'm going to start very simple with these two reverse image blocks that were designed on a ninepatch grid.

Applique

Tessellated Quilt

This tessellated pattern is made by repeating a simple rotated block.

I want to see what it looks like in various colors.

And I want to try appliqueing on it with this figure composed of pieces cut on my Go fabric die cutter.

I'm going to play with this ninepatch unit to see if I can make it tessellate.

Piecing

Tessellation

This is a quilt top that I designed in my 10 June 2010 post. It is a tessellation; it was designed using a single shape that was repeated over and over.

Tessellation

What if I start with this tessellating shape, can I create an interesting tessellated pattern?

What if I put 4 of them together rotated?

Does this pinwheel tessellate?

Tessellation

What if I start with this simple tessellation and see if I can use it to build a more interesting one.
(To review tessellation go to my 17 April 2010 post)

Tessellation

If this block looks familiar to you, it's because I was playing with it a week ago on 20 May 2010.  I am going to play with it again today.

A while ago I developed this tessellating pattern based on this basic unit. (See my 28 April 2010 post).
