Blocks

Unnamed

The other day (27 November 2010) I used this simple block as the basis of a tessellation. Today I want to try using it differently.

Hexagonal Blocks

I've seen quilts made from hexagonal blocks but I've never made one. I thought it would be fun to try designing one.

I'll start with an ordinary ever-day hexagon.
What if I make an ordinary every-day hexagonal flower from 7 hexagons?

Blocks

Sawtooth Star

Two days ago (24 October 2010) I pointed out that a Sawtooth Star block can be made from a simple unit that is repeated 4 times.
I then played with that simple unit. I put 4 of them together in several different ways to create a series of new blocks.

Today I am going to treat those new blocks as if they were units and put them together 4 at a time to create super-blocks.

Blocks

Sawtooth Star

I like to take old blocks, such as this Sawtooth Star block, and change them to make new blocks.

Paired Blocks #1

Ohio Star & Sawtooth Star

Ohio Star and Sawtooth Star are two very similar blocks.

What if I use them both together in a quilt top?

Blocks

Wonky Shoo Fly

Yesterday I discovered that I could make a series of 12" wonky Shoo Fly Blocks by simply rearranging the order of the grid dimensions of a Shoo Fly block.

Blocks

Friendship Star

What if I color a Friendship Star slightly different?

What if I combine 4 Friendship Stars rotated to make a larger block?

Blocks

Wonky Grecian Square

I can create a wonky block from a Grecian Square block by changing the grid dimensions.

What if I use both blocks to design a quilt pattern?

Colors

Wonky Dutchman's Puzzle

Yesterday I created this wonky Dutchman's Puzzle block.

What if I try coloring it a couple of different ways?

Blocks

Wonky Dutchman's Puzzle

What if I take a Dutchman's Puzzle block and change its regular grid into one that is based on the Fibonacci series 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...?

I get a wonky Dutchman's Puzzle block.

Blocks

Log Cabin

The Log Cabin block on the left comes from my 2 June 2010 post. I've changed the colors slightly to create the one on the right. I want to try this new and livelier version in various settings and see what turns up.

Blocks

Wonky Ohio Star

What if I start with an Ohio Star block and change the grid so that it is part of the Fibonacci series 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...?

Playing with Blocks

Crow's Foot

When I first saw this block referred to as Crow's Foot, I was surprised. I'd always thought of it as Bear's Paw.

But the block most often called Bear's Paw is this. So I've had to revise my thinking.
