A Do Over

Mix & Match # 1

Last year some time I cut a Jacob's Ladder block into 4 quarters and then did the same with an Ohio Star block. I shuffled the pieces and came up with two new blocks. Then I used the blocks to design a quilt top.

The quilt top deserves a better border than the one I gave it. So I thought it was time I did something about that.

Mix & Match # 5

Jacob's Ladder
& Ohio Star
Ohio Star on the left and Jacob's Ladder on the right are two very traditional blocks that anybody can easily make.

Anybody means you.

What If Two Blocks Became
Two Different Blocks?

Jacob's Ladder           Ohio Star

What if you take two blocks. Cut them into 4 quarters each. Take 2 quarters from each block and sew them together to make a new block. What do you get?

We're about to find out as I'm going to do that very thing with a Jacob's Ladder block and an Ohio Star block.

Echo Block #3

Jacob's Ladder

This quilt design starts with  Jacob's Ladder blocks of two different sizes.

The two are combined to make what I call an Echo block.

There are 16 ways the two can be combined.

Color Play

Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder is a traditional block I like. I've tried making it wonky. I've tried scrambling its units. I've tried cutting it into quarters and putting them back together differently. Now I'll try one more thing.

Scrambled Block #1

Jacob's Ladder

On occasion my mind wanders and I put a block together wrong. It occurs to me that this doesn't have to be a bad thing. What if I were to intentionally mix up the units for a block and make a new block? I can call them scrambled blocks.

You get a wonky Jacob's Ladder block, which I think is more interesting than the original.

Wonky Block

Jacob's Ladder

I had so much fun playing with the wonky Jacob's Ladder block in my 10 September 2010 post that I thought I would see what sort of designs I could find using both it and the regular Jacob's Ladder block together.

Borders

Wonky Jacob's Ladder

I picked this design from my 10 September 2010 post to add borders to.

What if I start by duplicating the block grid around the outside of the design?

Wonky Block

Jacob's ladder

When I change the grid on a Jacob's Ladder block I get a wonky Jacob's Ladder.

By asking what if and playing with various arrangements and color versions I hope to find something that I like.

Wonky Block

Jacob's Ladder

When I change the grid on a Jacob's Ladder block I get a wonky Jacob's Ladder block.

I'm going to play with this by asking what if over and over. Maybe I'll find something I like.
