Double Crested Cormorant

I wanted to piece a picture of a Cormorant standing on a rock and sunning its wings.

I started to draw on a grid but it's hard to tell what is actually happening until it's colored in.

Hooded Merganser

This was my first attempt at creating a Hooded Merganser block. I was working from several pictures and, of course, the exact details are different on each one. What varies most is the shape of the head and the white "fan" depending on whether the "hood" is up or not.

Not bad for a first attempt but the beak is too fat.

I created this design for a Red-winged Blackbird assuming that that there would be divisions at the neck and the tail.

I thought it looked fine until I colored it in and then it looked way too fat.

Toucan

I thought it might be fun to try piecing a Toucan. It has a very distinctive beak that is almost impossibly big. And it comes in wild tropical colors.

Eastern Kingbird

I want to design an Eastern Kingbird block for two reasons.  Its simple black and white coloring should be easy to duplicate.  And its official name, Tyrannus tyrannus, is intriguing (I was going to say cool, but I don't know if cool is still cool.)

I got out my gridded paper and drew this picture of a hummingbird. It will make a fine quilt block once I've figured out how to piece it.

Nuthatch

I want a quilt block featuring a Nuthatch; so I drew this sketch of a Nuthatch on a tree branch.

The Nuthatch looks fine but the tree looks like a telephone pole with a fake branch nailed to it.

Canada Goose  (See also: 21 December 2009)

I started to make this pattern for piecing a Canada Goose.  But I stopped at this point because it didn't feel right.
 
I now know what's wrong.  One of the wings is a narrow pointy triangle.  I over simplified it and took all of the curve out of it. It looks skinny, stiff and unnatural.
