Playing with Piecing
Flamingo
I found this free clip art on the internet.
What if I use it as my base art work and see if I can create a pattern for piecing a flamingo?
Choosing seam lines involves a lot of trial and error. This is my first attempt.
The legs are too fat. The piecing around the head seems a bit awkward and complicated to me.
What if I try again?
This is better. It is cleaner and simpler.
When I break the pattern down into large pieces I can see how simple it is. I am confident that I will be able to sew it.
I am happy with this result.
A few embellishments, such as sewing an eye, or quilting feathers for texture, will complete it.

I like the way you think! It makes perfect sense to me.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished version.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I love flamingos and have made many quilted ones. I love your block. It is simple but fun. Thanks for posting your process.

ReplyDeleteI can't recall the last time someone said that I make sense. This is a new experience for me.

ReplyDeleteI hope I don't disappoint you.
This blog is an exercise in coming up with ideas for quilts. I don't know that I'll ever use any of these ideas in actual quilts. I don't know that I won't either.
It's an old problem - I can design way more than I can sew. I enjoy both, but designing is definitly faster and easier.
In the meantime, if you can't wait, you could always try sewing it yourself. That would please me to no end.

ReplyDeleteI have a confession to make. This is a very much edited version of my design process.
When I design I start by doing something, anything, and then I change it and then I change it some more and I keep changing it until it eventually turns into something I like.
If I blogged every little change this blog would be interminable. So instead I create a kind of precis that covers the more important steps. I then cross my fingers and hope that the short version makes sense.
