Paired Blocks: Nine Patch & Monday

The block on the left I originally called simple block #8. Not the most memorable name. So I decided to change it to Monday.

I decided to play with Monday and Nine Patch to see what sort of designs I could discover.

Paired Blocks - Nine Patch & C Block

I wanted to see what would happen if I combined a Nine Patch block with a Snowball block. Except that I didn't really use a Snowball block. But I don't know what else to call it.

My Snowball block quickly turned into a different version of itself. Since it looks like a C, I guess I could call it C-Block.

Simple Block #8 Again

After yesterday's post I got the urge to play some more with this unit.

Even worse, I wanted to play with this arrangement of the unit.

So I did

Quilt from a Simple Block

In my last post I used a simple block to design this quilt top. My wife wants to make the quilt and asked me to produce a pattern for her. I thought I would work it out online and show you how I go about turning a promising design into an pattern.

Look What Pauline Did

Pauline started with a Shoo Fly block; cut it into quarters; and reassembled the quarters to make a new block. She then used the new block to make this quilt.

If you are having trouble picturing the Shoo Fly block it looked like this:

Look What Darla Did

Darla made a large version of my Disappearing Shoo Fly design.

"I could not believe how easy it was to do this quilt. I really think it should be done as a quick & easy video, and I think people would flock to this design....Can't wait to quilt this thing, but I have a few more ahead of this in line!"

Darla sometimes goes by the name of Scientific Quilter.

Look What Wendy did

Wendy sent me this picture of her version of my Disappearing Shoo Fly quilt.

Here's what she had to say:

"Hi!! I am the Australian tourist whose Canadian cousin challenged me at Drumheller last July to replicate your 'Disappearing Shoofly' in my own colours. I really appreciated your permission to photograph the quilt and have regularly checked your website- and will continue to do so. The colours were inspired by our lovely white beaches with waters that go from teal to deep blue, plus the colours of desert sand hills. Happy memories."

A Do Over

Modified Clay's Choice

This quilt top design was based on a modified Clay's Choice block.

It needs a border. I don't want to do a plain border. I want to do something that relates to the design itself.

A Do Over

Nine Patch En Point

29 November 2014 I was wondering if I could design an interesting quilt using only Nine Patch blocks.

This is one of the quilts I came up with.

A Do Over

Ottawa
In April of 2015 I designed this block and this quilt top.

I wonder if I can improve it by adding a new border?

A Do Over

Mix & Match # 1

Last year some time I cut a Jacob's Ladder block into 4 quarters and then did the same with an Ohio Star block. I shuffled the pieces and came up with two new blocks. Then I used the blocks to design a quilt top.

The quilt top deserves a better border than the one I gave it. So I thought it was time I did something about that.

A Do Over

Another Seebe?

Once upon a time I designed this unit and colored it two different ways.

I played with the units and came up with these blocks that I used to make my Seebe quilt.

Simple Block # 6

What if I use a square, a split square and a half square triangle to make a block?

This is the block I came up with.

Here are 4 ways I came up with for using this block:

Old Block Plus

Nine Patch

This is obviously a Nine Patch block. I've placed it in the middle of a grid. What if I try filling the empty grid squares around the Nine Patch block in many various ways?

The best way to find out is to try it.

Paired Blocks #32

Sharon

Theresa

Quite some time a go I designed a swirl block I called Sharon and another one I called Theresa.

When Tried pairing theses two sister blocks to create quilt designs, this is what I got:
