Playing with Blocks

Nine Patch

What if I ignore the traditional coloring for a Nine Patch block?
What if I color it like this instead?

Playing with Quilting

Ohio Star

I want to explore some quilting possibilities for this Ohio Star block.
What if I create a second block by stitching the outline pattern of an Ohio Star block?  I'll use heavy dark purple thread. I could straight stitch this; or, if I want more emphasis, I could use something wider such as a satin stitch.

Nine Patch Quilt

On 24 January 2010 I added the border to this quilt. Before I sew the quilt I have to decide in what order I want to piece it.

This was designed using a Nine Patch block.  But it doesn't have to be pieced using Nine Patch blocks.

Ohio Star

Ohio Star is a simple block that has the potential to do wonderful things.  I want to see what kind of quilting I can devise for it.

From My Pieced Alphabet:

25th Avenue

Grids are useful to use for designing letters.  But there are times when it is better to ignore the grid.

I created this queen size bed quilt using, for the most part, Broken Dishes blocks.  I am not finished yet. before I can begin sewing I need to give it a border.

Lion

I want to use this lion's face as a quilt block so now I have to work out how I'm going to piece it.

I've drawn it on a grid to make it easier to determine were to place my seam lines.

The eyes, mouth and whiskers are shown in red because I'm going to stitch those.

Playing with Quilting

Log Cabin Block

Log Cabin blocks are often assembled to form diamonds.

I've already designed some quilting for Log Cabin blocks.  What if I arrange those blocks so that they form diamonds?

How can you indicate roundness in letters without using curved piecing?

Broken Dishes Quilt  (See also: 3 February 2010)

Before I can sew this quilt I need to plan how I am going to piece it.

Experience has taught me that the steps I follow in designing a quilt are often not the best steps to follow when I'm sewing it.

Log Cabin Block  (See also: 7 February 2010)

Log Cabin blocks are often assembled so that similar colors form bands.
What if I fill those bands with continuous quilting?

Panda

I found this little fellow hanging around the house.  He suggested I might want to try designing a pieced Panda block.

What if I do a little research and then try drawing a Panda face?

Broken Dishes  (See also: 19 January 2010)

This quilt motif was made using 2 version of a Broken Dishes block.  I like this motif, but it needs more; it needs a border.

From My Pieced Alphabet:

Stampede

This is an alphabet that looks like it belongs on a wanted poster from the old west. Or at least that version of the old west that we see on TV and in the movies.

Bird Feeders

It was one of those winter wonderland days when I took this picture of bird feeders in the backyard.

For the record, on the left is a seed feeder, on the right is a suet feeder, and in the middle is a squirrel baffle.

What if I try to make a pieced quilt from this photograph?

Log Cabin Block (See also 2 February 2010)

Given a Log Cabin block my first thought is to fill the triangular spaces with triangles.  But I'm allowed more than one thought; so now I'm going to try something else.

Log Cabin Block

Elsie suggested I try quilting log cabin blocks (See 29 January 2010 comments). I'm going to give it a try and see what happens. Wish me luck.

Most often Log Cabin blocks are colored half light and half dark. This creates 2 triangular shapes.
