Shoo Fly Placemat
This placemat is made using 6 Shoo Fly blocks. I want to try quilting it.
What if I try this pattern that radiates out from the center of the block, using a contrasting thread color?
I like this and I'm tempted to stop here. But I want to see what else I can come up with.
What if I try the same pattern using a matching thread color?
This is not as vibrant. There is not enough happening in the white areas.
What if I zigzag back and forth in the white squares?
This is a good start but it needs something more in the white diamonds.
What if I fill the diamonds with triangles?
Too busy. A lot of buzz and no music.
What if I fill the diamonds with diamonds?
This is vibrant and has character. I've found what I'm looking for.

What a great idea to experiment with quilting ideas in this fashion! I think I like the first one the best! It creates another level of design.

ReplyDeleteI like the first one too. I was trying to do something a little more subtle for a change. The last one, while not subtle no matter who you ask, is more subtle that the first one.
Placemats are ideal for experimenting on. They are quick, easy and cheap to do. You might want to click on Placemat in the column on the right to find more experiments.
Great tip, Wayne! Thanks!
