From My Pieced Alphabet:

Bowness

Some years ago, when I was still new to quilting, I was reading a quilting magazine and found the word Randolph pieced into a school reunion quilt. Since it was by an amateur quilter I assumed that she had made a valiant stab at creating her own letters.

However, I have seen other examples of the same alphabet since then. So obviously it was an alphabet she found somewhere.

It is an alphabet with many faults. Rather than catalogue them all and let you see what a nit picker I can be, I'm going to show you a revamped version of the alphabet that I designed so that you can compare the two. I'm sure you'll be able to spot the differences.

If you have any questions about any of the changes I made, feel free to ask them.

For samples of other alphabets go to My Posts by Subject and click on Lettering.

  1. I'm so glad that somebody is paying attention to alphabets! I'm a word lover, and it hasn't happened yet, but someday I'll be doing a quilt with words... and I will be poking around your archives and posts for inspiration and advice!

I started quilting because I saw so many pieced alphabets that I thought were badly designed. I wanted to see if something better wasn't possible.

I would love to see more people doing quilts with pieced lettering. It could become a sub-genre comparable to calligraphy.
