Keep Trying
Sometimes it's a good idea to leave a design you've been working on and come back to it later. This gives your subconscious a chance to mull things over and come up with some new suggestions.
Yesterday I designed this border for the African batik picture that I bought from Pippa Moore.
I like it. But what else can I come up with? Is there something I can try that I'll like even better?
What if this block is used for the border?
I like this border; it's pleasant, but it needs to be more than just green.
What if the light green is replaced with black?
This is stronger.
What if the dark green in the stars in the center of the blocks is change to a light green?
This has more life to it.
What if I the black is replaced with a dark grey green and the stars are colored black?
I like this version of the block better, because it is more unified. Before the stars stood out from the rest of the block. However, this is too subdued and could use more life, more color.
I think that stitching in the ditch to create concentric squares around the central image would work for this.
What if colors from the picture are use to color the blocks?
This has more life to it. It is getting close.
What if the center star in each block is the same green as the background?
The border seems to float, giving the quilt some depth.
I'm glad I didn't stop with yesterday's design. I like this better.

It can take a while and a lot of playing around before I finally settle on a design that I feel works. Sometimes it means completely scrapping the direction I was going in and revamping the whole layout. But it's always worth the wait, I've not yet been sorry about a setting I've used.

ReplyDeleteMy experience is that the things I think of first are usually not very creative; they are things that are obvious to everybody and have been done before. But I have to get them out of the way before I get to the good stuff.
The good stuff, when I finally get to it, feels so right that I end up wondering why I didn't think of it in the first place.
Lots of punch in this. Are you going to sew it? Hope you publish a photo when it is complete!

ReplyDeleteIn for a penny, in for a pound. Having bought the batik picture, I am committed. Now that I have a border design I will assemble the necessary fabric and do dome sewing. I promise to publish the picture when it's done.
