Playing with Borders

Broken Dishes

A week ago (8 May 2010) I designed this quilt top using 6" on point Broken Dishes blocks.

I added white all around the outside edge to make it 72" x 72". Now I want to design a border using 6" Broken Dishes blocks.

On Point

Broken Dishes

What if I take a 6 x 6 Broken Dishes block, turn it on point and add some color to the center?

This 12" x 18" placemat is made from 6 Broken Dishes blocks.  Yesterday I designed quilting for a placemat just like it. Today I want to change it.

Playing with Quilting

Broken Dishes Quilt

Let's go back in time for a moment.  In my 5 January 2010 blog I played with a Broken Dishes block and created a quilt top. The next day I added some quilting. On 17 February I added a border.  You can see the result on the left.  Obviously, I now need to complete the quilting design.

Broken Dishes Quilt  (See also: 3 February 2010)

Before I can sew this quilt I need to plan how I am going to piece it.

Experience has taught me that the steps I follow in designing a quilt are often not the best steps to follow when I'm sewing it.

This quilt motif was made using 2 version of a Broken Dishes block.  I like this motif, but it needs more; it needs a border.

What if I start with the outline pattern and see what I can come up with?

Playing with Blocks

Broken Dishes  (See also: 12 January 2010)

I used these 2 variations of a Broken Dishes block to create this larger block.

Yesterday I used 4 of this larger block rotated to create an even larger block, which I thought quite nice.

Judy was not impressed (see her comments yesterday) and wondered if it might not look better if I used mirror image blocks.

Today we'll find out .

Playing with Blocks

Broken Dishes Blocks are based on this outline pattern.

What if I start with a Broken dishes block and a Diamond in the Square block in outline form and use them in a  Ninepatch setting?
