Playing with Piecing

Nine Patch Quilt

If you go to my blogs for 27 & 28 January 2010, you will see how I designed this quilt starting with a Nine Patch block.

Now I need to determine the best way to piece it.

The borders I can ignore because they present no problem.
Since it was designed using Nine Patch blocks, what if I divide the quilt top into Nine Patch blocks?

There are a lot of little pieces here.  That means a lot of sewing and a lot of opportunity to make mistakes.  It would be nice if I could sew this from larger pieces.
What if I divide it both vertically and horizontally on either side of the red X's?

These larger blocks can be made from larger pieces; so this should go together much quicker.

The Nine Patch blocks were useful for designing this quilt but not for sewing it.  How a design is arrived at doesn't always dictate how it is pieced.

  1. I like this way of thinking, and it is great to see it explained. Nice to be able to do away with un-needed seams ..... I don't mind the sewing but dislike the extra seams in the finished quilt.

I'm like you, I don't mind the sewing. What I mind is taking a piece of fabric, cutting it in two and then sewing those same two pieces back together again. It's a waste of time, a waste of fabric, a waste of thread and it creates opportunities to make mistakes.
