Amish Star #4

Sashing

Amish Star

This is one of the ways I came up with for coloring and Amish Star. (See my 7 August 2010 post.)

When I combine 4 of them rotated I get this new block.

I want to experiment with how 6 of these blocks look with sashing between them.

There are dark, medium and light areas in the blocks. What if I match the sashing to the dark?

The sashing separates the blocks but that's about all. It doesn't add to the design. In fact I think the design would look better without it.

What if I match the sashing to the medium colored areas?

This time the sashing modifies the design. I have a new design and I like it.

What if I match the sashing to the light areas?

Again I have a new design that I like.

Originally my idea was to put sashing around the large blocks; but now I'm wondering what if I put the sashing around the Amish Star blocks instead?

What if I match the sashing to the dark areas?

This time the dark sashing takes part in modifying the design and I like it.

What if I match the sashing to the medium areas?

I have a new design that I like.

What if I match the sashing to the light areas?

Once again a new design that I like.

I get 5 different quilt top designs that I like using the same blocks but slightly different sashing each time. I don't know about you, but I think that's exciting!

  1. Just goes to prove that you should not stop trying to improve a design when you get something you like .... the more often you keep going the more often you find more designs which are as good, and sometimes better, than the first one you liked.

My experience is that first ideas are very often old ideas. Finding new ideas takes some digging. And the best ideas are new ones.

  3. These are very intriguing... are you going to make them into a quilt?

Not all of them will be quilts. Besides they need borders first.
