Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 6 comes out 13 November, and I have a block in it on page 58. I thought you might like to see it.

My block, Indian Cabins, is part of my Alberta Series of ninepatch pinwheel blocks, all of which are named after towns in Alberta.

I enjoy designing blocks, but I never know if a new one is any good until I've played with it a bit to see what it can do.

So I'm going to play with this block.

What if I simply repeat the Indian Cabins block?

The blocks join up and create a secondary pattern, a swirling background for the black pinwheels.

What if I combine Indian Cabins with its mirror image?

I get a very different background design for the pinwheels, one that has a variety of shapes and sizes.

What if I try offsetting the Indian Cabins block?

The blocks look like they are on point. This arrangement gives me a chance to do something a little different in the corners.

What if I offset the blocks even more?

The blocks connect differently this time and provide lots of space for fancy quilting.

Every block has the potential to be many different things. I never assume that a block can only be used one way. I hope you don't either.

What are your impressions of the blog tour? Leave a comment below and on 10 November your name will be entered into a draw to win a free copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks magazine.

To see what other designers who have blocks in the magazine have to offer go to Quilty Pleasures.

  2. During blog tour I can see many different block, settings, whole quilts, which is not in the magazine. Good addition for us. Thank you.

  3. Designing quilts is easy???? I complained about the price of quilt patterns until I started desgining my son's college graduation quilt myself--what a mess I've created! I've certainly changed my mind. The Designers deserve every penny they get!

The blogs are all so different! I guess like the quilters themselves!

  163. I love the blOck by itself, but I really admire the one-block design and the completely offset one. The warm browns and golds are nice too.

    Congrats and thanks.

  168. Thank you for showing all the different ways to set your blocks. I never thought of doing "mirror image", it's gorgeous. The repeating and offsetting of the blocks reminds me of the mazes that you drop a marble on top and it drops and winds it's way down. I love this blog tour as I always see new ideas and discover new blogs to follow, like your's, hehe.

Thank you for your giveaway and a chance to win.

It is a very lot for me to try to do each day though, i wish it lasted longer and had fewer entries per day, but that is just me. and i love to go back and look over the blogs afterwards, fond memories. scarlette shobbs@scarlette.com
