Playing with Borders

Card Trick Quilt

Yesterday I created this quilt top starting with a Card Trick block.

Today I want to see about giving it a border.

The magenta centers remind me of ribbons.

What if I repeat that ribbon-like element all around the outside of the quilt top?

I like this but it needs more.

What if I expand the background and then finish the quilt off with a dark magenta binding?

This is good.

I notice that I accidentally drew the bottom border bigger.

What if I make all four borders the same width?  Which is what I was going to do in the first place.

Either will work.  But in this case I believe I like the bigger bottom border better.
What if I color the background oustide the ribbon a slightly darker tan?

I'm done. This feels to me like something out of my grandmother's era.

  1. How pretty! The ribbon border is perfect. Interesting choice of colors too. It would look different with other options and fabrics. Good job, Wayne. Now, how would you quilt this one?

I tried using a light purple background but i was uncomfortable with it, I felt the neutral tan worked better.

  3. Wayne,

    This one is a winner!
The nuetral tan becomes a background, and the bright, strong contrast really stands out. Repreating the ribbon in the border is great, and I like it with and without the darker colour.

I think the ribbon border is the single most important factor in unifying this quilt and making it work.

I agree with you that both the light and the dark outer borders work. They have a slightly different feel; so which is best would depend on where the quilt is going to be used.
